Route 1 Southern Meraner Höhenweg / Alta Via di Merano

Meraner Höhenweg interpretive nature trail is an around 100 km loop trail where hikes can be begun and concluded at any point along the trail. The trail takes you around and through Naturpark Texelgruppe in five days via its two sections, which are called respectively, northern and southern Meraner Höhenweg interpretive nature trail. The southern trail leads from Katharinaberg Schnalstal valley along the southern boundary of the park to Ulfas, which is located above Platt / Plata in Passeiertal / val Passiria valley (marker 24). Along this stretch are numerous places from which you can return to your starting point, among them Hochganghaus, whose elevation (1,836 m) is the highest on the trail. The south trail ends in Ulfas after around 18 hours of walking time. From here you can descend to Platt and take the bus to Meran or continue on northern interpretive nature trail.

The entrance to the southern trail, which is near Katharinaberg (1,245 m) in Schnalstal / Val Senales valley, can be reached by bus from Meran / Merano or Vinschgau / Val Venosta. The Pfossental / Val di Fosse valley trail (marker 24) leads to Eisjöchl (2,895 m), the highest point of the tour, and on to Stettiner Hütte refuge, where you can spend the night. The trail then continues on to Lazins and ends at Ulfas above Platt / Plata after an around 12 hour hike.

Texelgruppe / Gruppo di Tessa Nature Park can be hiked from west to east via Pfossental / Val di Fosse valley via a trail that leads across Eisjöchl into Pfelderertal valley, which is the main side valley of Schnalstal / Val Senales valley (Vinschgau / Val Venosta) in the Texel range to the east. A narrow but accessible road from Schnalstal valley to Pfossental valley forks off the main road right before Karthaus. The road ends at Vorderkaser (1,693 m), the highest settlement in Pfossental valley, and from there you take the foot trail (no. 24) up the valley to Mitterkaser. This takes an hour, and from there you proceed to Rableid Alm and then to Eishof. Path no. 24 takes you from Eishof up to Eisjöchl (2,879 m) in two and a half hours. From Eisjöchl a steep trail (no. 24) leads down to Lazinser Alm (1,860 m) and on to Lazins and Pfelders (1,624 m).

Vellau / Velloi (906 m) - Leiter Alm / Malga Leiter (1,525 m) - Hochgang-Haus / Rifugio del Valico (1,839 m) - Hochgangscharte / Il Valico (2444 m) - Langsee / Lago Lungo (2377 m) - Grünsee / Lago Verde (2338 m) - Spronser Joch / Valico di Sopranes (2589 m) - Valtschnaljöchl / (2423 m) - Valtschnal Alm / Malga Valcanale (1,871, m) - Pfelders / Plan (1,622 m)

This highly scenic route bisects the Texel group from north to south and can be hiked in a day. Vellau can be reached by car from Meran / Merano or by chairlift from Algund / Lagundo. From there a chairlift goes to Leiter Alm (1,522 m), the starting point of the hike. The tour begins with an easy, panoramic trail (no. 24) that leads to Hochganghaus, which can be reached in around an hour. From there a steep but safe trail (marker 7) leads to Hochgangscharte (2,444 m) in just under two hours. The hike then continues on an easier trail to a place where the trails to Milchseescharte (marker 7) and Grünsee (marker 22) fork off. Take trail 22 which leads to Lake Langsee. Then, following marker 22 to descend to Grünsee Lake. From there the trail leads to Spronser Joch (2,589 m), Valtschnaljöchl (2,423 m) and then through Valtschnal valley to Pfelders (1,622 m). From Pfelders you can take a minibus to Moos in Passeier / Moso in Passiria; from there, Meran can be reached by bus.
